Lessons for Success on the AP European History College Board Exam

Welcome to Ms. Wilford's Lessons for Success! This is a work in progress for AP European History Students at Muscatine High School in Muscatine, Iowa.

Goal: To increase student success in passing the Advanced Placement (A.P.) European History Exam, students will learn test-taking strategies which involve writing A.P. Thematic Essays, A.P. Document Based Essays and answering A.P. Multiple-Choice Exam Questions in order to improve writing skills and analytical skills utilized in evaluating historical questions and source materials.

Module 1: Preparing for the A.P. Thematic Essay

Writing Essay Tests

Students will outline and model the major characteristics of a thematic essay after reviewing selected essays and essay standards.

Students will learn to write and defend thesis statements after reviewing selected standards and thesis statements.

Students will learn to apply organizational skills to their essay writing in order to meet A.P. exam time limits.

Students will write responses to sample A.P. European History thematic essays to practice and model thematic essay writing skills.

Module 2: Preparing for the A.P. Document Based Essay

Students will evaluate and critique Document Based Essays using College Board scoring standards.

Students will distinguish between biased and unbiased documents used in document based essays.

Students will write responses to sample A.P. European History document based essays to practice and model for A.P. exam

Module 3: Preparing for the A.P. Multiple Choice Exam

Students will distinguish between scoring policies for multiple choice questions left blank, answered correctly, or answered incorrectly.

Students will learn to apply POE (process of elimination skills) when analyzing multiple choice questions.

Students will respond to sample A.P. European History multiple choice questions to practice for the A.P. exam.
